JonnyPew: Using MTU Aggro to Hunt Mission Runners in High Sec

There are only a handful of EVE Online channels I subscribe to and JonnyPew's is my favorite.

Recently he has been using the Suspect Timer that you acquire from attacking another player's MTU (Mobile Tractor Unit) in high sec. This timer does not get you concorded, instead it allows other players to shoot you in highsec (and lowsec) without any penalties until the timer expires.

That means no Gate or Station Guns, No Navy Aggro, and No Concord!

This is something I talked about way back when they first introduced the Suspect Timer. It was my belief that "Suspect Baiting" would replace the old and now dead tactic of Can Flipping.

To do this you need to scan down other peoples Mobile Tractor Units. The best places to do this are active mission systems, however people may feel safer using the MTUs in lower traffic areas.

This can be done Solo or with several characters, but you should always attempt to make your enemy believe you are weak and killable, so as to encourage them to attack you after you take Suspect.

JonnyPew does this with an Stratios, which is a solid choice. Other ideas would be Assault Frigates or T1 Cruisers, or even T2 Cruisers like HACs or Recons.

Once you have your ship picked out just Scan the MTU down with Probes, save the location, then warp to it with your combat ship and start killing the MTU. Best case scenario the Mission runner will engage you and thus give you the right to kill him. Worst Case, he ignores you and you either kill the MTU and steal the Loot or he scoops the MTU before you kill it.

Either way it can be a fun way to cause some trouble and stir up local.

Here are two videos by JonnyPew showing him doing it...

On a second note, I have just finished updating the website to a new look. What do you think? Suggestions? Find a bug?

  • Hey...

What fit would he be using to do such a thing? I'd like to have a go of messing around with the locals

    • @Chaos. No special fit. You need good reps, cap boosters and 1 or 2 medium neuts. In case of Stratios..standard active tanked Dual MAR PVP Stratios. You can also use standard Vexor or even better dual rep Navy Vexor if you like drone ships. But be careful and check who are you engaging. Because they are people like me out there who are doing LVL 4-s in popular system just to wait for somebody to engage MTU. When I dont have energy for standard WH hunting..I sometimes switch to High sec lvl-4-s. Pick my omni tanked dual rep Dominix with 4 heavy neuts, scram and dual webs. Find popular lvl 4 system with most destroyed MTU-s, start to run missions and wait fore someone to engage my MTU. It is a lot of fun. SO check mission runner killboard before you engage.

      • When the MTU was first put in the game, you could attack it and get the missions runners drones to auto agress you , provided they were set to agressive.... Many, many a faction fit mission ships were ganked this way, leaving them totally dumbfounded. Finally CCP went ahead and made the change, now even if the drones are on agressive, they wont attack even if you shoot their MTU... Was fun while it lasted, JohnnyPew is a day late and a dollar short.. His youtube videos always seem to replicate things that were already being done long before his videos come out. I really loved his vid about using wormholes to get in and out of null space lol.... Me and countless other players were doing that when wormholes were put in the game, but I guess Johnnypew gets the credit due to making the video, lol...

  • I fucking hate hate hate hate these guys. But I was taken in once, lost a Navy Dominix, and won't fall for it again. Lumbering mission battleships don't stand a chance against a PvP fitted Ishtar with Ogres was the primary less N learned.

I did have the pleasure of watching a 3rd party tackle and destroy two toons that were trying to goad me by firing on my MTU a few months later. Glorious.
